This weekend I am at the Home Educators of Virginia annual homeschool convention and to say that it can be overwhelming at times is truly an understatement. There are so many ‘shiny’ things to see {and touch} that it can feel like your head is spinning.
For the older kids, most of the curriculum is lined up. For Kaleb, I’m still looking to tweak a few things in a few areas. Today as I wandered around the vendor hall, I did pick up a few things for him {some school related and some fun} and will share all of our plans later, but thought it might be fun to share a few things now.
Handwriting is one area that Kaleb is a little different than some of the older kids. He uses the sheets that I make in all of the printable packs, but using a Reason for Handwriting last year was a little difficult. While he may be ok with that later this year or next, for this upcoming year I picked up Handwriting Without Tears.
I truly think that the shaded squares will help give his brain that added visual on containing the letters. Once he has that mastered, we will try moving back to the other handwriting curriculum.
And just for fun, I picked up the Jericho: The Promise Fulfilled DVD for the little Lego lover in our house. I have a feeling that this will be VERY well-received when I get home {grins}.
That’s it so far!! The used curriculum sale opens up tomorrow and I am planning out workshops to attend. I love this part of convention, because it is always a time of recharging for me!

Jolanthe,
It was so awesome to meet you today! My husband and I are both so grateful for the work you do and share! We have had a fabulous time at the convention! I love the handwriting book you picked up, the blocks look like a GREAT way to visualize the space, and I hope the video brings lots of fun and happiness ;)
As far as new stuff, we picked up a beginner pack from HEAV, and hubby is going back tomorrow to get The Right Start Math System for K. From the UCS we got a new recorder (Alex informed me before we left that he would like his lost one replaced LOL) and a book for learning to play it, also got a mini chalkboard, a just for fun science CD, and a science workbook for K that we liked….ohhhh and a book of 365 phonics activities! All of that for $20, I couldn’t be happier! :)
It was great meeting you as well. I’m sorry I forgot to text you back at convention. I was hopping all over the place that day. :) I hope you had MUCH fun and learned bunches!!
I had such an amazing time at convention! I feel re-charged and super excited to start our first year of official homeschooling!! Had fun hanging out with you and so want to come over and watch that movie!
The kids have already watched it twice…and then promptly ran upstairs and started playing Legos. :) Gotta love it!
Yay so glad the loved it!
HI I know I am late to the party on this post however…. WE LOVED HWT! Miraculous turnaround. This was our first year Homeschooling. ( we loved it too) but last year in school Daughter dear struggled and struggled with the beginnings of cursive and her printing was barely passable. Our Sonlight curriculum advisor recomended Handwriting without Tears and Lo and Behold! Lovely printing and happy cursive beginnings clean through to well done cursive writing and reading cursive as well! So Pleased I hope it helps your son like it worked for us.
Catharine
Thanks, Catharine!
