Back in September, I shared the 25 books we planned to read-aloud together during this school year. It’s something I’ve actually printed off so we can keep track of the progress {or lack thereof} that we are making in our reading endeavors.
A quick glance at the list may have sent me into a wee bit of a panic. It also made me realize there were quite more than 25 on my list – because I cannot count apparently.
Somehow I conveniently forgot how LONG a few of these books actually were {hello to the Mysterious Benedict books}. Also, in the past a few of these books literally put me into sleep mode within five minutes. There have been many moments of cuddling and reading though – and more will be read soon since there is a book reading challenge currently going on with a nearby library!
But, in the spirit of being honest and showing the lack of progress we are making, here’s a look at the book list and those that have been finished.

We’re about one-third of our way through our list and time is starting to wind down, so we’ll need to pick up the pace some. This is one of those lists we definitely want to finish!

Nice list! My Father’s Dragon was our very first chapter book read aloud (ah, the memories!).
I love the Little House on the Prairie series but I think they work much better as independent reads than read alouds.
Haven’t read the Mysterious Benedict Society – must add that to my list.
We’re using the Narnia books for literature study this year so many of our read alouds are authors that influenced C.S. Lewis like George Macdonald and Edith Nesbit.
We are reading The Wheel on the School. I had never heard of it but it was on a 1st grade read aloud so we went for it. It’s nothing like what I thought but we are really enjoying it. My 7 year old is way more into it then I thought she would be!
I’ll have to look into that one, Nichole.
We LOVED The Wheel on the School! My daughter did a literature fair project with this book and we have such fond memories from that time spent. Some books are treasures – and The Wheel on the School is one of them!
We finished the Viking Quest series and we just LOVED them! I highly recommend! Now we are reading Farmer Boy.
That is the series we’re going to finish next. The kids have LOVED them. :)
We just finished the Children of Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren and have started Happy Times in Noisy Village…the chapters are short so we usually read two each time…
Adding those to our list as well! :)
We’re reading “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit” right now – it’s such a wonderful book, and a true story, too.
I’ll have to add that one to my Amazon cart so I remember! :)
