Bird Lapbook ~ Preschool Corner

Preschool CornerLast week I pulled out the robin lapbooks that the three older kids had done a few years ago. The moment Kaleb saw those three pulled out he wanted to know where his was. After realizing he didn’t have one ~ well we had a project for this week!

Our week started out with Kaleb staring out the window at the daddy cardinal that loves to sit in the tree off our back porch. The pair of cardinals are at our feeder constantly and we love watching them!

For Kaleb’s bird lapbook we used only one file folder and the minit books from Homeschool Share’s Backyard Birds file. I opened the file folder flat and then re-folded it so that there were two smaller flaps on the sides. The above picture shows the front and the back of his lapbook. For the back cover, Kaleb colored a picture of a robin for me. For the front he

  • Talked about where birds build nests
  • Kaleb dictated and then illustrated two robin stories {I did the writing below!!}.

Birds lay eggs. They sit on the eggs. Then they hatch. They grow and turn into a dad or mom.

Birds lay eggs on the ground, in trees, on buildings, and in holes. Robins lay four eggs. They are about the size of a quarter.

On Thursday we glued the pieces of Kaleb’s lapbook together {and were a little camera-shy}.

That about sums up our week. Other than Kaleb asking every single day when we could do another chalk pastel together of a cardinal.

Thinking that needs to be on the list for next week, eh?

How was your week?

Learning About Birds ~ Preschool Corner

Preschool CornerWe are having so much fun learning about birds together. So much, that we’re going to do more next week as well. I was going back through some of the things that I did with Zachary years ago and have been planning a few other fun things for us to do together. I have to laugh as I look through these pictures ~ Kaleb apparently likes all of his blue shirts a whole lot! Here’s a little peek at what we worked on this week.

Identifying Bird Calls

The older kids are learning about birds in our science time with Nancy Larson® Science 2, and one of the things we all enjoyed this week was listening to different bird calls through the cd-rom in the book Common Birds and Their Songs.

Common Birds and their Songs

The kids were trying to figure out which bird calls they’ve heard in our own backyard and laughing at some of them. We were finally able to figure out one of the bird calls that we’ve heard often ~ a pileated woodpecker!! Kaleb noticed one on a branch outside of our school room a few months ago. We haven’t seen him since, but we have heard him.

Bird's Nest

When we were cutting back our ferns this week, I found a bird’s nest that was hidden inside from last spring. Kaleb and I had fun looking at it…until he realized that the black stuff inside was most likely bird poop.

Bird Themed Arts & Crafts

Backyard Birds Cards

Michaels had miniature wooden birdhouses for $1 and Kaleb picked out one to paint this week. It’s now sitting in our windowsill near all of our Backyard Birds cards for when we are looking out and identifying birds together.

Rice Krispie Nests

Rice Krispie Nests were one of our snacks for the week too. Laurianna helped with the rice krispie part and Kaleb had fun tinting the coconut with food coloring to add to the nests. We used jelly beans as our eggs, but they were a huge hit.

Robin Footprint Craft

I saw this cute Footprint Robin and it was something that I knew Kaleb would love and may be super cute to frame and hang it the school room too {grins}. He loved having his feet painted and finishing up the project too!

Birds Nest Craft

ALL of the kids wanted to make the birds in a nest craft once they saw Kaleb making one.  Apparently you are never too old to paint a paper plate and make a mess everywhere!

Chickadee Pastel

We dove into the realm of soft chalk pastels and all of the kids drew a chickadee {thanks to HodgePodge for the tutorial}. Kaleb had a little help with the initial body shape, but he did all the rest on his own ~ colors and tracing to finish his project!

Bird Themed Printables

Bird Themed Printables

The One More and One Less pages from the Kindergarten Bird Printables were a HUGE hit with Kaleb. Do-A-Dot markers were again once of our go-to things to grab to mark off the numbers that we added and subtracted.

Parts of a Bird Printable

We’ve been working on many of the other printables from the Bird Preschool Pack as well as the new Kindergarten Bird Printables. When the older kids were learning about the parts of a bird, Kaleb worked on the modified version that I put together for him on the parts of a bird printable.

Birds and Easter Fun ~ Preschool Corner

This week we started a unit on birds with the older kids as part of our sciencePreschool Corner lessons with Nancy Larson Science 2. When Kaleb realized what we were doing, he said that night that he wanted to do birds for his school time as well. He remembered doing some the year before, so I pulled out our Bird Preschool Pack for him to work on and then realized that he was ready for a little more. I’m working on some more printables to use with him next week {and share with you all too!!}, so stay tuned for those!

Learning About Birds

It’s been fun watching our feeder, especially since the weather has been beautiful and we can sit on the screened porch very close to them and hear the birds ‘talk’ to each other.  We have some FABULOUS picture cards from Backyard Birds that we can compare to the birds at our feeder. The nuthatch and the cardinal have been the two most common ones lately {pictured below in our Backyard Birds cards}.

Backyard Birds-1

A momma cardinal flew right up {and literally into} our window and then sat on the ledge looking right at Kaleb and me for the longest time. Kaleb sat SO very still and just talked to her {so cute} and I didn’t dare move, afraid I would scare her away. Maybe she was a bit dazed from her bump into our glass, but Kaleb had such a close-up look it was great!

New Baby Chicks

Baby Chicks

This has also been a great time to talk about birds since we have six new chicks living in our basement at the moment. The kids are all loving on them, have built houses for them out of our Guidecraft blocks {complete with colorful water blocks for windows and paper towel floors to catch the poop}.

We are able to talk about the many different characteristics of birds:

  • What do birds eat {what do our chicks eat and what do other birds eat?}
  • How do birds get around {flying, walking, climbing, swimming, etc…}
  • What do all birds have in common {how are the chickens like the birds at our feeder?}
  • How do some birds differ from others?

Our Easter Projects

Resurrection Garden-3

Since we’re getting closer to Easter too, I also pulled out our Resurrection Eggs and we’re working on some Easter projects as well, including a Resurrection Garden. Kaleb helped gather rocks and moss for it this week and we are now waiting for our grass to grow as we talk about all of the events leading up to Easter. I know it’s a bit weird to look at right now, but when it sprouts, it will be much fun {this picture was before we added in the moss}. We’re checking it for sprouts all the time!

I’m still waiting for our book Benjamin’s Box to arrive {to go along with the Resurrection Eggs} and we’ll read that together next week along with The Legend of the Easter Egg.  Along with that, we’ll continue learning about birds together.

That’s about it for us this week! What have YOU been up to? Please note the NEW website address when you link up this week. If you have a button on your blog, could you grab the coding and help direct people to the new address? Thanks so much!!

Pulling Preschool Toys Off the Shelf ~ Preschool Corner

Over the last little bit, the school routine with Kaleb has been one week focused on a theme and then a week of focusing on basic areas. It’s made things a bit more laid back for us and given us time to have fun together, even if it isn’t theme related. We’re trying to pull out more toys that haven’t been used in awhile too.

So far, so good. :)

Our pattern blocks emerged from the shelves to see the light of day {we have wooden pattern blocks from Learning Resources}.

Pattern Blocks

In math Kaleb is working on identifying the number I name, writing the number that comes next, simple addition, telling time to the hour and counting dimes.

Preschool Math

We talked about pitch this week in science {using Nancy Larson Science} and used the xylophone to demonstrate the low and high pitches and the difference in the bar sizes.

Xylophone

This week we’ve been focusing on the letter ‘u’ and the sound it makes {Kaleb has a hard time between the short ‘o’ and ‘u’ sound}. We’re working through All About Reading Level 1 and below you see him pretending to milk a cow’s udder to remember the ‘u’ sound.

All About Reading Level 1

Kaleb was having so much fun with one of the letter sound bingo game from All About Reading {and being quite the ham in the process}. I had to videotape him because he was being so cute and thought it would be fun to share {and yes, his hair typically is that crazy}.

How was your week? Do you have one toy on the shelves that needs a little dusting off this upcoming week? Leave a comment below. :)

Cowboy Unit ~ Preschool Corner

cowboy theme unit and activities for preschool and kindergarten from Homeschool Creations

From the moment we started this week of Cowboys, there have been four gun-toting, bandana wearing, {rain} boot wearing cowboys running around my house and yard.  Wanted signs have been posted on the walls and as much as I tried, I could not convince the kids that KALEB was the one who was learning about cowboys and the west…not them.

I had to outlaw toothpicks in mouths and feet propped up at the tables, as four kiddos seemed to forget that it was possible for cowboys to have manners. On the bright side, they enjoyed it immensely. :)

Kaleb woke up on Monday morning to find the following sign up in our kitchen {I replaced the picture later that day for him, after he put on a ‘cowboy shirt and chewed a toothpick for good measure}:

Wanted poster

During the week we read a variety of books, but the one we enjoyed the most was Cowboy Small by Lois Lensky.  Every day we worked on some of the printables from the Cowboy Printable Pack and also did a few hands-on activities.

Cowboy Printables

The ‘which two are the same’ worksheet from the Cowboy Printable Pack was one that threw Kaleb for a little loop this week {and one I’ll have to start making more of in future packs!}. He liked it and didn’t get frustrated with it, but it was nice to mix it up a little bit for him. :) He’s also beginning to enjoy {well, complain less} about cutting out pieces and his scissor skills are getting better too.

The horse in the book Cowboy Small  was named Cactus, so it was fun

Cucumber Cactuses

Kaleb was so excited to put together the cucumber cactus craft. It seemed so simple, but he spent quite a bit of time working on it and had it proudly displayed on the counter for all to see {and/or nibble on}.

Other Crafts

Kaleb made a few other basic crafts ~ a cactus out of construction paper. He glued pieces of rice onto the cactus to look like the thorns popping out and small pieces of tissue paper for the flowers.

We traced Kaleb’s foot to make a Footprint Horse {via Busy Bee Crafts}.

Here’s a quick peek at Kaleb’s desk area this week. His cowboy song {from the Cowboy Printable Pack}, the Wanted poster, a few of his crafts and other school things are all around his desk.

Cowboy Preschool Theme

There were so many other things that I had wanted to do with Kaleb during this week ~ but we didn’t get to do, mainly because the kids were having so much fun playing cowboy, sheriff, and such on their own together ~ and I wasn’t about to interrupt that!
