Keeping it Real ~ My Mega Project Timeline Goal

Full-Size-Discipline-Challenge-300x300

With the release of 21 Days to a More Disciplined Life and an upcoming 21 Day Self-Discipline Challenge starting November 1st, I thought this would be a great time to share an area that I’ve been putting off. Because in truth it just seemed a wee bit overwhelming and there are ALWAYS other things that I can do.

Ahem.

Enter our history timeline. Last year we started working on timeline information with Mystery of History, but

  1. the printed figures that we had were a bit too large
  2. I didn’t have the ‘right’ timeline to put up in our schoolroom
  3. and {you can insert additional excuses I thought up here}

This summer I found a great timeline poster, hung it up on the wall, and ordered different timeline figures so I could print off a smaller size…and the timeline is still hanging empty on the wall. No figures, dates or anything to help in the process.

Most unhelpful, you might notice. I even have it hiding behind our spelling board so I won’t notice it as much. Can you see it? It’s hiding in shame…yes, it is.

My project for the 21 day challenge will be getting the timeline caught up to where we are in history. Printing off the key timeline figures, coloring them in, laminating them…and having that timeline off my ‘to do’ list once and for all.

There will be more details on the 21 Day Self-Discipline Challenge coming October 31st, but in the meantime, I’d love for you to consider joining me and others in tackling our self-discipline and a specific project during the month of November. Maybe there is an area that you would like to work on: an unfinished scrapbook, getting back into the exercise routine, etc…

Having accountability really helps me, so I’m looking forward to sharing more of what I’m doing over the course of the 21 days – will you join in too? Pick up a copy of 21 Days to a More Disciplined Life and start thinking about what area you would like to tackle during the challenge  – can’t wait to hear what you all are working on as well!

Learning to See ~ Journeys of Faithfulness Week 1

journeys book club

This week in reading Journeys of Faithfulness, we caught a glimpse into the lives of Mary and Martha, two sisters whose story we know well. Mary was the sister who loved deeply and chose to sit at the feet of Jesus, soaking in all that she could. Martha was the busy sister who was so caught up in the business of doing that she missed the ‘being’.

In my life, I admit that I most relate to Martha – checking off my ‘to do’ lists and always feeling that I must prove myself to others {and God}. What I love most about this passage though is how Jesus responds to Martha’s clamor for attention and her need to be right.

Journeys of Faithfulness Book Club

journeys book club

Over the next three months, I’ll be leading a book club for the book Journeys of Faithfulness by Sarah Clarkson. Officially, the book club starts today and will ‘meet’ each Wednesday through November 28th over at the Homeschool Village. I would love to have you all join in!

For those of you who don’t know Sarah, she has been writing since her teen years and is the daughter of the well-loved Sally and Clay Clarkson. Sarah is also the author of Read for the Heart: Whole Books for WholeHearted Families. Here’s a little peek into the book….

In this unique collection of inspirational stories and devotions based on the lives of Ruth, Esther, Mary and Martha, and Mary the mother of Jesus, you will celebrate the sacrifice and courage that made each these young single women biblical heroines and models for all times. In Journeys of Faithfulness, Sarah creatively and respectfully retells their stories and explores each of their journeys along God’s path of life. Each chapter also has a devotional in which Sarah shares her heart with the reader and challenges for today’s young women – to reach higher and go deeper in her relationship with Christ.

Down…and Kickin’ Back

Ummm…you know how you have ambition to do something, and then it seems as if everything around you is conspiring in the exact opposite direction?

Yeah. That.

Last week we lost internet for several days. A wee bit of an issue when one is attempting to blog.

server down

The internet was finally revived {thank you, Verizon}, and the demise of our server was next in line. That may not seem like a huge issue, but every single one of my files and photos {other than my pictures from Africa} are on our server hard drives.

I was working on a few printables. Can’t now. {sigh}

We are fairly certain that we should be able to retrieve the files, but meanwhile I’m feeling like I am sitting here and twiddling my thumbs. This morning I had an ‘aha’ moment that perhaps {just perhaps – ahem} God has been giving me the wonderful opportunity to be, instead of do.

Whatcha think?

I’m thinking it’s about time I caught on. {grins}

I do have a few post scheduled for the rest of this week and a few next week, but hang in there with me over the next bit as our family just enjoys a bit of a breather and spends some time relaxing, k?

I’d much appreciate it!

Change is a Good Thing

The last week has been one where my mind and my heart were going through such a rollercoaster of emotions on the heels of my trip to Tanzania.

There were moments where I would be smiling and then just seconds later was a sobbing mess on the floor. Trying to put my finger on what in the world was going on ~ well, that was just about impossible because there were so many different reasons.

And truthfully, blogging just seemed so…trite. One moment I was ready to just toss the whole blog thing out the window because of the extremes that I had witnessed the week prior. How in the world was I supposed to go about our day-to-day routine and jump back into life after seeing how other families struggle to even provide food for their children?

These were just a few of the thoughts barreling through my brain last week. Those and the contemplations of selling all that we own.

So blogging was pushed aside. The first few days home I was S.I.C.K. And although that was stinky, God knew that I needed some time to just be still and process. Listen. Wait.

Through that time {and I’m sure the weeks and months to come}, I’ve been reminded of how much we have been blessed with and that I should continue walking in what God has called me to do ~ as a wife, a mother, and here on this blog.

Granted, there will be changes in things here at home. In my heart. In how I approach things here on this blog. We are blessed. So amazingly blessed. And through those blessings, we are able to in turn bless others. And now we as a family desire to do so much more than ever before.

So while in some ways it seems that we’re back to life as normal, truthfully, we’re not. I’ve changed. We’re changing.

And change is a good thing.

Here a Chick, There a Chick, Everywhere a Pet Chick

Last week we took a trip into town and returned with six little fuzzballs. After last year’s rooster fiasco {remember we had FIVE out of eight chicks turn out to be roosters}, we opted to skip our local chicken swap and work with a company that sexes their chicks. Math is one area that we can figure out easily enough and know that 8 – 5 = not enough eggs.

Pet Chicken

Although we didn’t plan on getting quite so many, apparently there is a state law that requires a minimum purchase of six. A few chickens may need to find a new home in the coming months.

Pet Chicken

Apparently our bunny wasn’t even distraction and now the kids are playing with chicks as often as they can. Cuddling. Making them pets as much as possible.

Pet Chicken

Inside they stay until the weather allows them to join their chicken friends in the coop outdoors. For now the chicks’ home is a giant Rubbermaid tub and a nice warming lamp. There they sleep, peeping away and keeping four children occupied in the afternoons.

If you need some tips on chicks, my post introducing our chicks last year generated some great suggestions. :) We also decided that names are important and picked names that could not be shortened to any form of a boy’s name {just in case} ~ like Henrietta. All of our chicks with those names last year were the roosters {no kidding}.

Any new animals in your life lately?
