What I’m Reading (June 2016) – Reading for Mom

what I'm reading June 2016

Although it isn’t officially the first day of summer, it definitely feels like it around here. The pool is open and for our family, that means a LOT of time will be spent poolside in the upcoming months with warm weather and swim team. For me, life feels like it is finally slowing down some. The last month and a half have been a whirlwind of family visiting, traveling all over the place, and honestly not a lot of down time for reading (at least not as much as I’d like!).

Somehow though, summer seems to usher in a feeling of slowing down and taking a bit of time to enjoy a book (or ten). Yesterday I cracked open a few new books and made a little pile of books to read in the upcoming month. I’d love to hear any good books you all have to recommend as well!

My June 2016 Reading Pile

My 2016 reading list is coming along well, and I’m pulling a few from that list to read as well as throwing in some fun fiction for good measure. My brain needs a bit of a break finishing up the school year and that’s my primary way of disconnecting and getting ‘lost’ for a bit. Here’s how my reading pile is shaping up for the month:

  • Giddy-up, Eunice! by Sophie Hudson (releases this month – yay!) – I have LOVED her past books and sense of humor. Highly recommend any of her other books and know this one will not disappoint.
  •  Making it Home by Emily Wierenga – this one has been on my shelf for a bit, but making it a point to read this month
  • Parenting is Heart Work by Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller – I’ve read several of their other books (Motivate Your Child is fabulous) and they are ones you’ll want to keep on your shelf. I’m only one chapter in, and already loving this book.
  • Traces of Guilt by Dee Henderson
  • From This Moment by Elizabeth Camden
  • The Beautiful Pretender by Melanie Dickerson
  • The Green Ember by S.D. Smith

That’s it for this month! What are you reading for yourself or together with the kids? Leave a comment and share. :)

Homeschoooling Through the Summer (2016)

Homeschooling through the summer 2016

We’ve wrapped up testing for the year (PHEW!) and now are finishing up a few subject areas to fully complete our regular school year. Homeschooling through the summer may seem crazy, but continuing learning time during the hot summer months also has its benefits. Summer school isn’t necessarily a fully planned out endeavor in our home but more informal and a little something to keep the learning happening. Our kids 100% need downtime and a chance to explore, however it can be hard to reign them in at the beginning of the year otherwise.

This year, our six week on and one week off rotation worked fairly well and we were able to take a longer break at Christmas – something we definitely plan to do again! The larger block of vacation time in the summer and around the holidays is definitely wonderful and there will be plenty of pool and relaxing time, but having a summer routine going on is very helpful to us!

Homeschooling Through the Summer Subjects

This summer we’ll be focusing on a few of the basics and then if some other fun interest-based learning (Kaleb love rocks and we will be digging for shark teeth as well!).

  • Reading – a few of our kids definitely need continued reading practice, and we’ll also be working on read alouds and audio books together. We just received the latest adventure from Heirloom Audio, and that is sure to keep us busy! Add in summer reading programs and we will have plenty to do!
  • Science and STEM – while our kids love LEGOs, we are going to continue working with EEME and our Little Bits to create. Add in the rocks and weather fun Kaleb has been having with our Home Science tools, and we’ll have plenty to keep us busy.
  • Field trips – yes, please!!
  • PE – there is going to be a LOT of swimming. Swim team starts up in a few short weeks and that involves a whole lot of practice, practice, practice!
  • Rest – it may seem that we’ll be busy, but we do fully intend to relax and have fun too.

When We’ll Work

Early morning means swim practice, so likely after returning home we’ll take a time to work through our daily chores and a bit of school time. Afternoons are typically the time we like to relax and hang out at the pool or with friends – we definitely need to get that relaxing in.

The idea is to keep it simple and fun. Front porch swings can be a great place to keep the learning going!

Advantages to Summer Homeschooling

Even if you only do one or two subjects over the summer months, there are a few advantages for your family:

  • Less review time when the official school year starts. You know those worksheets at the start of many books that just seem like repetition from the prior year? Yep – they are. Keeping the learning cycle going during the summer months can cut back on many of those ‘repeat’ lessons and let you get to the new concepts faster.
  • It’s easier to get back into the normal school routine and schedule. Just working on one or two things a day can keep the learning routine going in your mind and in your child’s, making it easier to ease back into the new school year routine.
  • There are TONS of great things to do in the summer. Ok, technically there are lots of great things to do all year round, but the summer time definitely offers a few things like summer reading programs, field trip options that may have been unavailable during the summer months, educational classes at a local children’s center or museum, etc. The opportunities for summer hikes and walks abound – really, so much to do!
  • It’s a great time to try out new programs without changing everything. Maybe you have a different approach you’d like to try for reading, but it didn’t mesh with what you’ve been doing during the school year. It’s a great time to try out some new things in an informal way.

Will you be schooling through the summer?

Every Mom Has Hard Days – FREE Video Series

The kids are behind where your school plans say they should be. Housework is completely overwhelming you. Dinner? Let’s just say it might not be balanced again. And attitudes are running rampant – from both the mom-end and the kids.

We ALL have days like this. Trust me – the tears flow on my end and there are moments when I hide in the bathroom for a few moments to pray and gather my wits together. But I feel like a failure more often than I care to admit.

It’s so easy to let the “I’m not a good mother/wife…” rant cycle through my head over and over. Maybe you feel the hashtag #momfail should be added on to your entire day.

(Can I encourage you in this area???)

As much as we feel we fail our families and ourselves over an over again, it really isn’t true. I know that it is so very hard in today’s Pinterest-heavy culture to get caught up in what we are not, rather than focusing on the truth of who we are as moms and women in Christ

That’s why I am SO excited to share a brand new and FREE video series from two moms in the trenches – with 8 kids and almost 20 years of mothering experience. Together they’ve put together an encouraging three video series for moms called “The Truth About #MomFail Culture: 10 Things You Need to Hear on the Hard Days”.

These moms understand how tough days can be! While they won’t solve all the problems you may have, they CAN offer a fresh perspective and encouragement from another mom who really gets it.

Each video is short – around 10 minutes, and you can watch it on any sort of device and whenever you’ve got a few spare minutes. To watch the free video series, just click this link and enter your name and email to sign up. You’ll get access to the first video today, and then one per day after that.

And meanwhile, if you need some encouragement right now, please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll pray for you today! You don’t have to say why – just say, “Please pray!” Hang in there, momma. You are NOT alone and I’m giving you a hug from here.

Small Progress Over Time…

progress in small way adds up to big improvement - HomeschoolCreations

The past few years have been exhausting at times. As much as I try to remind myself every child learns at his own pace, there is always a part of me that has felt like I’ve somehow missed the mark. Not done enough. Am failing as a mom and teacher.

Mentally I set goals and even wrote a few general ones down at the beginning of the year for Kaleb’s reading, but day to day it was hard to see progress being made. And it was frustrating (for both myself and him) very often.

“Daniel’s Duck” was one book on Kaleb’s list to read this year, and this past week he read a large chunk of the book with little pause. A page with this much text would have completely overwhelmed him only a few short months ago. He has taken huge leaps in the last bit and I am so thankful to be a daily part of it (even when there are days that have me wondering if I am failing my child).

Every day sees progress in some small way that over time adds up to improvement. It’s hard to see at times, especially when we are a part of the small steps leading up to those larger strides. Yes, it requires perserverance and sticking through those (maybe many) rough days, but progress is being made.

Can I encourage you in this, if nothing else, today? Bit by bit, step by step. When it’s overwhelming, when you are tired, and when you are uncertain – the things you are pouring into your child’s life and heart are taking root and growing. Be faithful – and encouraged, parents. You ARE making a difference in your child’s life.

The FIRST Thing To Do When We Need Encouragement

There are days, and weeks, and months, when our hearts are weary and we feel so overwhelmed. We wonder if we’re doing the right thing for our kids and our families. Some days I’m the one in position and need to reach out to a friend for support and encouragement. And Jesus.

Because you all – if there is one thing I know, I would be nowhere without HIM.

The last few days have been a huge reminder to me that every single one of us go through times where we need encouragement. Wednesday I traveled to Nashville to speak at Teach Them Diligently. One of the BEST parts of blogging is having the opportunity to step out beyond this site and share my heart in person at conferences. Although I have notes and an outline for each session, each time there are different tangents that I tend to wander down – and often those tangents are as much for me as they may be to speak to one of the hearts sitting in the room with me.

This past weekend was one of those times. Before one of my last sessions I felt the need to go off ‘script,’ share a bit more of my heart with those attending, and share my scattered thoughts and what God had put on my heart.

A song had been replaying in my head the few days prior to speaking (a few weeks ago I shared a video clip of our our kids singing it), and the second verse of that song was what spoke to me the most:

I’ve seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we’re all searching
For answers only you provide
Cause you know just what we need
Before we say a word

That then brought up a memory of a very difficult day with one of our kids many years ago. The morning consisted of two hours of seemingly endless crying and whining. I was at the end of my proverbial rope. Up until that point I had tried every thing that I could think of: holding, diverting, ignoring. Nothing was working. I left the room for a moment, stopped and prayed, and immediately felt that I should put worship music on.

Within seconds of that music starting, the demeanor of that child changed completely. The crying stopped. Smiles came out. Singing started.

It made me pause and realize. For TWO HOURS I had tried everything on my own to make the situation stop. When I finally took a moment to stop and pray, the solution to the problem was there.

The first thing we should do – before we text a friend, scroll through Facebook, or retreat into feeling the weight of what seems impossible – is ask for help from someone who has the answers for us.  But sadly, we often take my relationship with Him for granted. It’s easier to turn to what is familiar, what we know, look for a ‘quick fix’ solution on our own and we forget to stop, pray and ask for help from the one who knows our needs before we even ask.

Today, can I encourage you (as I’ve been encouraged and reminded myself) to ask for help from the One who is so very willing to help and provide answers for you? And if you are in a place today where you need prayers, I would be more than happy to pray along with you! You can either leave a comment or email me. I would truly be honored, especially because I know how much God cares for each and every one of our needs.

Hugs today friends as you start a new day and a new week!

Life in This Moment (or the last few…)

Monday has dawned VERY bright an early. I may not exactly be a fan of daylight savings time, especially on the heels of a late night out with the kids. On the other hand, the few days after the time change are the rare occasions when the kids sleep well past 7 am. Today is going to be a slow starting day.

This past weekend the kids all the opportunity to help out at The Roadshow Tour. They are all huge fans of the Newsboys and many of the other groups performing (Phil Wickham BLEW us away), but our family also has a heart for sharing the work of Compassion International. While the kids were definitely excited to hear some of their favorite bands, my heart was so full seeing their faces when they were handed a completed child sponsorship form – and knew that person was making a difference in the life of a child. (Learn more about child sponsorship here.)

The rest of our weekend has been packed with lots of prep – finishing up Powerpoints and transferring files so I am ready for Teach Them Diligently in Nashville at the end of the week. You all – it is such an honor and JOY to be able to share my heart at this conference and get to meet many of you!! This year I’ll be sharing on balancing home and school, meal planning, and strategies for a successful homeschool year – I hope to see you there!

At home though – well, the family needs to be fed, so the kids and I sat down and planned out meals for the next two weeks, so I can rest when I get home next Sunday. Can I tell you how much I am really loving the weekly meal planner? Lots and lots.

Yesterday I spent some time shopping because my wardrobe (for the main part) consists primarily of t-shirts in solid colors and the same pair of jeans (I may or may not own three of the exact same pair of jeans because I love them and they are familiar). My idea of shopping is dash in and grab because I HATE SHOPPING. Picking out clothes is akin to torture for me, but wearing something other than blah is also lovely as well. The above is the result of taking a friend along for moral support – and I may or may not be proud that I branched out into two patterns and pops of color to go along. Apparently many of you are not fans of shopping either. Of course we’re talking books – well, that may be another story.

This week I’ll be sharing more on what the kids have been up to the past few weeks, but until then – have a GREAT week!! Me – I’m going to curl up in bed and enjoy the quiet this morning with a cup of coffee and a book until the kids finally wake up!
