This week we had fun with some of my finds from the Dollar Tree. And just because they involve eggs doesn’t mean we won’t keep using them. :) I found some other cute ideas that use all those extra plastic eggs, so hopefully this week I’ll get working on those too.

Kaleb started actually pronouncing his ‘s’ this week – so his ‘yea’ turned to the sweetest little ‘yes’ (or really a ‘yeth’). Just to cute. He is coming into his goofy personality more and more, making us laugh at every turn.

I pulled the plastic eggs apart and Kaleb spent some time first matching the colors and then matching tops and bottoms of the eggs together.

We pulled out two bags of pom-poms and an egg coloring tray (all Dollar Tree) and used the tray to sort the pom-poms by color.

Then Kaleb used some chalk eggs to draw on black construction paper.

I made a paint swatch matching card using nine different colors and clothespins. It took Kaleb a little bit to get used to opening the clothespins (and keeping them open), but after help on the first few, he figured it out and matched them all.

Kaleb pulled out the shape matching/sorting puzzle and wanted to work on it, so we did! :)

We pulled out the paints this week too – and used q-tips to paint a few pretty pictures.

After reading this ABC post on Totally Tots, I printed off the coconut tree template and stuck it on our dishwasher for Kaleb to play with. Kaleb had fun picking up letter and trying to name the letter or color.

While not much happened in the form of ‘school time’ this week because of kid’s sickness, my parent’s moving, and Mommy being completely out of it on allergy meds, there was something BIG that happened in our house ~ Kaleb moved to his ‘big boy bed’!

Believe it or not, Kaleb didn’t know how to climb out of his crib (or at least didn’t dare) until he saw a clip of a baby on America’s Funniest Videos. Nice, huh?

Because Rick and I were going away for a few days and didn’t know how he would handle the whole ‘freedom to roam’, we decided to wait to move him to the bottom bunk until we got back. While we didn’t say that, the kids kept reminding him that when Mommy and Daddy got home he would get to sleep in his big boy bed. So not an hour after we were home and said it was bedtime, he climbed up on the bed and covered up.

And he’s been there ever since! There haven’t been any major problems and it has been so sweet listening to him and Zachary talking to each other and playing together in the morning before they get up.

But it is the end of the crib era ~ and I’m still a little emotional about that. The extra room is nice, but that ‘baby’ aspect is gone {sigh}.

Next week…more actual school happenings. :)

This is my favorite picture of the week. Kaleb decided it was school time and I came around the corner to a bin of his ‘school toys’ all over the kitchen floor – but the colors were just too fun, so I had to go grab my camera.

He suprised me with some of the things he has apparently been learning while I was blissfully unaware – go figure. He was stacking pegs one at a time and counting on his own. I sat listening while he counted to TEN! The little stinker! Of course if I ask him to count for me any other time, he sits and thinks for a moment and then shakes his head and says no.

This day ended up being more Kaleb-directed. He had too much fun pulling toys out and playing to his hearts content. As always, he kept trying to put the pegs in the wrong holes (on purpose) and would just giggle and then put them in the right places.

To go along with our “I am the Good Shepherd” verse this week from Totally Tots, we made little cotton ball sheeps. I found the idea at Kids Craft weekly awhile back and have been holding onto it for some time. Just too cute!

We used our sugar shaker to put spaghetti noodles into. Kaleb really enjoyed for a bit until his older sister showed him that he could chew on the noodles.

Apparently I felt like living on the edge and decided Kaleb must be full, so we pulled out the glue stick and some green construction paper to make shamrocks. This craft lasted until Kaleb decided to try and eat the glue stick.

We have the Wii Outdoor Challenge mat and Kaleb likes to think that he can keep up with the big kids – and it’s just too fun to watch him play along.

I found some plastic frog and lizards at Target this week and we used them to sort into piles by what they were. Kaleb also had fun lining the frogs up and letting me count them for him – and then he would mess them all up. :)

That’s it for Tot School this week! Just to let you know, I have a great giveaway in store for my blog readers this coming Friday (the 27th) – worth $300!! Be sure to stop back by and see what’s in store!

I am a huge fan of the Dollar Tree. I don’t get to go in as often as I used to, which after this week is sadly evident. I didn’t think my basket was THAT full, but you know you’ve spent too much money when the cashier enthusiastically says, “Come back SOON!”

All for the sake of my children. {grins}

I found some great things for Tot School {ok, and lots of other things too} but first up this week was the sugar shaker and some candles on a stick (both from the Dollar Tree). Kaleb was oh.so.excited to play with these over and over again. And later in the week I found him trying to climb up my wall {literally} to get the container again – ‘More! More!’ Thanks to Carissa for her lovely idea, although I didn’t make it in time to get those cute little hearts that she has.

We were blessed to have amazing weather early last week and took a walk at a local park with all the kids. Kaleb spent most of the time in the backpack but had some time at the end to explore and poke around at the end of our walk.

Kaleb wanted to join in when Zachary was playing in a tray of rice, so he jumped right up and worked his way in. We moved him to the floor with a little more rice, some bowls and spoons and he had a blast pouring, stirring, dumping, transferring – and making a MESS of rice all over the floor. Because nothing says ‘this is fun’ like dumping 3 or 4 cups of rice all over the kitchen floor. Especially when you are super-excited about using the dust pan and the broom!

Since Kaleb enjoyed the rice so much, I filled a large plastic tub with a HUGE bag of rice, added some funnels and toys and let him play on the deck a few days later. Just a quick note: when you hide the container of rice, be sure to do it better than I did and avoid your own bedroom, or you might just find a few cups of rice in your bed when you are ready to sleep. Just sayin’.

Kaleb runs to the table every.single.morning and says ‘Paint? Paint?’ and I finally caved said yes. He painted his own beautiful watercolor. And then dumped the bowl of water all over the floor and table. And stained his hands and mouth blue when I turned my back for two seconds. You’d really think I would know better with our fourth child.

I pulled out our color matching cards to use this week (just three colors at a time) and Kaleb had a great time naming the pictures and putting them on the right color piles. The boy loves to sort.

And don’t tell any of the other kids in the house, but Kaleb got to play on the laptop when we were alone! We went to the FisherPrice website (you can read more about the site at Totally Tots) and he had a blast playing the counting game and the alphabet game for a little bit. Next time we will move to the computer downstairs so there isn’t so much banging going on, but he was thrilled to have a turn!

I asked Kaleb if he wanted to play a game this week (just me and him) and he pointed up to our game shelf and kept saying ‘Who! Who!’ so Horton Hears a Who it was! We hid the little clovers all over the living room and then ran around trying to stick them on his Horton mask. Listening to his little giggles was just too sweet.

Sometimes I look back at the pictures that I’ve taken during the week and wonder if I ever change my children’s clothes…or dress them in different things. Apparently I prefer to dress them in certain shirts and pants. *grins*

This week Kaleb kept disappearing into my room (where a lot of his toys are stored) and bringing back toys for me to play with. The big favorites this week were Melissa & Doug Deluxe Wooden Lacing Beads and also his pegboard from Discovery Toys.

He also found another hidden tub this week that has foam shapes that you match to make designs. This card he used was just matching different size shapes, but he is doing well naming several different shapes: circle, star, and heart. I love these shapes because they are so soft and squishy (I think from Discovery Toys). The shapes were great too because we talked about big and little and also about colors.

We pulled out our Tabletop Easel this week too and Kaleb loved sticking all the magnets on it. He is cracking me up though because not too long after he began putting them on, he started sorting them by color and lining them up (Mommy helped make them straight), but the picture that you see is just the beginning. By the end, the board was full of magnets sorted into four color groups. He is so particular about the sorting it is funny!

I have some great little bear puzzles that show different emotions and let you change the outfits they are wearing. I’ve had them for years and used them when I was teaching. Kaleb put pajamas on the bear and had a ‘ky-ing’ (crying) face on his bear and refused to let me change it. He kept imitating some of the other faces and naming the emotions: mad (grunting), crying (fake crying), smiling/happy (cheese!), and laughing (hahaha).

Later he put the ‘outside outfit’ on the bear and I mentioned that the bear must be happy since he could go outside now. Kaleb quickly got up, picked up the bear and the box and tried to take him out on the porch…and then started screaming when I wouldn’t let him go out. Sigh.

I found a ring toss at a yard sale and again with the color matching – he has to have the peg matched to the exact colored flower. He tried tossing them for a bit.

And then the ring toss turned into a mini-music session when the pegs became rhythm sticks instead.

Other favorites this week were the stacking pegboard and the geometric shape sorter that we have.

This last week we had a FUN stomach bug going through our house and Kaleb took the brunt of it. He was so happy to actually get out of the house (ok, maybe Mommy was more thrilled) and spend the morning at the children’s museum. So before you think we have the coolest toys in our house, know that they aren’t ours!

There is a huge magnetic wall and some great marbleworks toys that stick to the wall so you can create fun marble mazes. Kaleb just loves hearing the little ‘clink’ of the marbles and trying to catch them as they fall out.

We tried naming the shapes and colors while stacking blocks, but really they just make better hats, no?

Next we moved onto the critter station and {shiver} took great fun in looking at the hairy, hairy spider and trying to get the frog to pay attention the rubber frog that was banging on the top of his habitat.

There is a great barn area for the little kids that has the cutest horse. You can brush his tail…which Kaleb did again and again.

We quickly moved on to play doctor and ambulance together. That pesky stethoscope can be difficult to get working right.

One of Kaleb’s favorite places to visit (every.single.time) is the face painting area. He won’t let anyone else help him so he usually looks like … well, a mess, but he’s a happy mess and proud of it!

That’s it for this week! Hope you all had a fun (and less-sick) week! Don’t forget to visit Carissa at 1+1+1=1 for some more Tot School posts.
