Learning Scripture Through Music

This post is a part of my 10 Day of Teaching God’s Word series

One of the most effective ways we’ve found in helping our kids learn Scripture and have it ‘stick’ has been through music. A few years ago our family was introduced to Seeds Family Worship and the results have been wonderful. When I tell you that songs from one of the albums are playing daily in our home, I am not joking. Each member of our family enjoys the music, and I love knowing that as we listen, our kids are firmly planting God’s words in their hearts!

Take a quick listen to one of our favorite songs “Do Not Be Anxious” from Philippians 4: 6-7 {feed subscribers can watch the video here}.

Music also gives us the opportunity to get up and move around. Several of our kids get so much more out of learning when they are physically doing something. We might add in some silly hand motions or act out a song, but it all helps in remembering the words to the verses!

Hearing God’s word played in the background each day and  my kids humming Scripture and singing the word of God as they are in various places around the house just makes me happy. A few weeks ago it literally made me cry sitting downstairs and listening to the boys sing up in their rooms ~ repeating verses and knowing the words will be in their hearts for years to come.

  1. We LOVE Seeds – and we were recently blessed with their latest: PURITY – LOVE learning through singing…It definitely sticks in the brain, doesnt it?

    • It does!! Seriously the one set of cds that I can keep in the car and not go nuts listening to over and over. :) I have the purity one as well ~ just bought it for Laurianna and loaded it onto her mp3 player this week, but we haven’t listened to it all yet.

  2. I have been wanting to try the Seeds cd’s out- thanks for the coupon code!  I have listened to them online and like what I hear.

We downloaded a free album from the site Holy Oatmeal  http://www.holyoatmeal.com/

The songs are catchy yet simple.  My girls have been loving that cd in the car- and we plan on singing one of the songs for special music when my 7-year old gets baptized.

  3. I had not heard Seeds Family Worship before but I like it VERY much!!  Thanks for posting.  Our family has really enjoyed Sons of Korah and Jason Coghill.  Sons of Korah sets the Psalms to music and their music has helped us to keep God’s Word in our minds and heart.  Jason Coghill was one of the original members of Sons of Korah and now has some solo albums.  We really like some of his stuff as well.  Here is a link to a squidoo page on Sons of Korah:

    Hope you enjoy them too!!

  4. off to check them out! :)

  5. Michelle Stevens says

I’m trying to buy from the link above with your coupon…it says “invalid coupon”? Has the promotion ended or they need to update something or it doesn’t apply to the  cd’s I’m trying to purchase (vols 1-6)? I typed it in and also copy and pasted neither worked for me :(

  6. Thanks for this post! I love learning the Word through song and want to share that with my son too.

  7. We don’t have Seeds yet, but we love Songs for Saplings.  Like you said, it blesses me so much to hear my little ones singing these Bible verses throughout our day!

  8. Cool.  We recently started doing Bible memory with my sons (3 1/2 and 2).  I’m always amazed at how many verses they already know by heart.  We make a little craft and hang it on the wall and then constantly repeat our verses.  I wrote about it on my blog:  http://www.faithandfrugality.blogspot.com.  We haven’t used songs, but we do have a Hermie CD in the car that is Bible verse songs.  I have learned a few from that!!  :)

  9. This is great!! I don’t have a particular resource we use, but I notice that our liturgy(we are Lutheran) is cemented in my children’s memory. This is all scripture and I love that!! Music is such a great tool for memorization and expression!!

I want to look into Seeds now. Thank you!

  10. Hermie and wormie scripture songs. From Max Lucados Hermie and friends series. Really fun scripture songs, with fun character narration in between, my daughter loves them! Thanks for the coupon, can’t wait to try them!

  11. I have been listening to the Hide ’em in your Heart cd’s, sung by Steve Green, (who is a wonderful singer by the way) for about 1 year now.  My 2 oldest children, who are 4 and 2 absolutely love these cd’s.  My 4 year old started to memorize the verses within a few days and even my two year old began singing the songs within a couple of weeks!  The music on these cd’s is so beautiful and I never get tired of hearing the songs.  My husband even plays guitar to these songs and we sing them all as a family on our own too.

  12. I’ve been trying to find music that uses the KJV. Do you know which, if any, are primarily using that version?

  13. I have been looking at your planner as well as many others available out there and I have just one question. How in the world do you folks plan for a year. I can hardly plan one day at a time.

    • Mimi, I try to block out some time in the summer before the school year starts to at least have a rough idea of what our school year will look like. I break it up into chunks: first figuring out breaks and time in school, then looking at our overall curriculum and breaking it up into 6 six-week segments, and then breaking it down from there. That has helped me SO much over the years. :)

  14. So, it looks like buying one gets you another to share… does that include the 8pack? Ie. buy 1 8pack and get a second included? I like the song on this page and am sure my 2 yr old twins will also. They’ve already memorized several other songs, maybe not perfectly, but still pretty well! :)
