This week we’ve been outside a LOT since the weather has been absolutely amazing in our area. Being outside has meant exploring {and seeing} some fun things.
Overall, our plans this summer for preschool are going to be pretty laid back. The only definite curriculum that we’re going to use is All About Reading Level Pre-1 and then we’ll have fun with a few Preschool Packs and time at VBS.
The kids gave me a hummingbird feeder for Mother’s Day and after dismal results the first week {and an army of ants invading it}, we had GREAT success with it this week, especially Thursday. We mixed up our own juice to go in the feeder, refilled it and have have been watching the hummingbirds visit our feeder.
Simple Hummingbird Juice: Mix 1/4 cup of sugar into 1 cup of boiling water until sugar is dissolved. Add red food coloring as desired. Store extra juice in the fridge.
The kids also spent the afternoon at the creek and caught an overload of crawdads. They attempted to get me to cook them up for them {claiming they taste ‘just like lobster’}, but I didn’t give into their demands and all but one survived the ordeal and were returned to the creek to be captured on another day. :)
Our chickens have been free-ranging this past week and Kaleb just sits on the porch and carries on conversations with them throughout the day. It’s pretty hilarious.
We also discovered that a small bird has built a nest in one of our hanging ferns on the front porch and laid five of the tiniest eggs. We’re carefully watching the nest and being careful ~ this will be wonderful when we start our bird study soon and we’re trying to get a picture of the momma bird so we can look it up and find out what it is.
The BIG excitement of the week was seeing a black bear in our backyard the other morning. Only one of the kids was there to see it with me, but it does answer a few questions about the noises and some odd happenings over the last few weeks.
Ahhhh…the joys of living in the country.

Crayfish or crawdads are great for science. When I taught 3rd grade we did a whole unit that focused on the functions and structures of crayfish. We even got see the whole life cycle. They were class pets. Classroom smelled terrible, but it was very educational.
HAHA!! Love the ‘classroom smelled horrible’ bit ~ might have to find a
place to keep them. :)
You can also tell what bird it is by looking up the eggs

just have to get a picture and spend a little time looking. :) haven’t
had a chance yet.
What a wonderful week ~ just perfect for the nice weather you all are having.
Thanks for hosting!
I love summer and relish it because it is so short up here. We have been having fun with the preschool packs too!!
Just an FYI, red food coloring (red #40) is a carcinogen(banned in Europe) and the hummers don’t really need it to find your feeder. Just plain sugar water will do. We couldn’t put one out this year because of the cat but planted lots of butterfly and hummingbird plants instead.
Do bears eat chickens where you live? It is definitely a problem in the country area where I am! Also, if you don’t already, you might want to be bringing in your hummer feeder at night – bears love that sugar water too! They are amazing creatures to see though, aren’t they. Rather scary in the middle of the night, but incredible when your able to get a good look at them and they aren’t doing anything destructive!
They can. This morning my hubby saw a gray fox leaving our yard too.
When we first moved to our house, I couldn’t understand why the owners
had no stairs going down the back deck of our house {it extends across
the entire back of our house and off our bedroom}. Now I’m seeing the
wisdom in it! :)
You really should give the crawfish a try. Lobster is pretty close! Done do suck the weirds stuff out of the head though, my hubby tried it and was not impressed. Our summer has been laid back too, with lots of fun play, crafts and exploring.
maybe I’ll get brave….:)
I’m from New Orleans (now residing in Colorado) and I would LOVE to be able to catch some crawfish!! Cook ’em!! Just boil ’em in a pot with some onion, celery, crab boil (you can find at most grocery stores — or at least at any walmart), maybe a few slices of lemon… That’s good eating! It’s a bit of work to get them open (for a beginner) and you only get that little bit of meat, but it’s sooo worth it! *sigh*
Oh my I think I might have fainted if I had seen a black bear! I bet they are beautiful though…in a scary kind of way….
